Ok, so I'm pretty dang sure that no one is reading this blog. Mainly because very few people even know that it exists. And those that know this exists also already know the big news. But I am going to share it anyway... We are really excited to be welcoming two little boys to our family in November!
Aren't they just so precious?! This is when I was only 13 weeks along. I don't have an updated ultrasound yet, but hopefully very soon. Although at 20 weeks, they are so big I doubt I will get a picture of both of them together. Since finding out we were having twins, many people have asked us questions. I will try to address the most common ones.
FAQs:
Do you know if they are identical or fraternal? No. The ultrasound tech for my first ultrasound was not familiar with twin pregnancies and therefore did not know what to look for during the ultrasound. (If there is one placenta, they are definitely identical. If there is two, it can go either way.) We DO know that they are in separate amniotic sacs, which is a very good thing.
Do twins run in your family? Were you on fertility drugs? No and no. These twins came as a complete surprise to us. Because the answer to both above questions is no, I am willing to bet that my babies are identical. (FYI: Fraternal twins run in families [only on the mother's side, the father's genetics have nothing to do with it], but identical twins happen spontaneously. No one knows why the egg sometimes decides to split.)
Can you feel them moving? Yes. As of about a week ago I have been able to feel them move around quite a bit. It has been really fun. Jason can also feel them move from the outside at times. I can tell which one is moving based on the location of the movement.
If they are identical, how will you tell them apart? Okay, mainly this is a question I have been asking myself. Sometimes, even if they are identical, there are physical features that can set them apart. They may be mirror images of each other. (For example, one may have a mole on his right cheek and the other has the same mole on his left cheek, etc.) One may be noticeably smaller in size than the other. And various other things. I am sure that even if there are no obvious physical features to tell them apart, I will be able to get to know their personalities soon enough and tell them apart that way. In the mean time I am thinking I will make them manly anklets to wear. :)
Are they going to share the same crib or have two separate cribs? After talking with other moms of twins, I think they are going to share the same crib for the first several months. Apparently twins seem to prefer this way of sleeping. It makes sense if you think about it. They have been stuck in a very confined space with each other for the past 9 months. It naturally is comforting to them to be by each other.
When is your due date? This is probably the trickiest question I get asked. Officially my due date is December 8th. However, it is really hard to say with twins because they tend to come early. According to the wonderful book I'm reading (When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads), twins come at 35 weeks on average. Basically what I am saying is, I am planning on mid to late November babies, if all goes well.
Wow, twins are going to be a handful! Are you excited or nervous? I am super excited as long as I don't think about everything that could go wrong and how stressful taking care of two babies will be. I think it will be an adventure. I know I'll have plenty of support and help when I need it. Plus, I don't know any different. That's one perk about having twins for my first pregnancy. If anything, having only one baby for my second pregnancy will seem like a breeze. Twins are going to be so much fun! I can't wait.
I am sure there are other questions that I am missing. But my brain just went blank. So if someone is indeed reading this blog and you have other questions, feel free to post them and I will do my best to answer them. If I think of any others, I will add them as well.
